EMS Unlimited and teamEMS review of Vida MTB Womens Clinic Sedona, AZ

Event Medical #ladyshred bike EMTs are all smiles after supporting a successful Enduro race.

Event Medical Solutions Unlimited (EMS Unlimited) and teamEMS review of the Womans only Vida MTB Clinic

EMS Unlimited provides event medical staffing in the form of Bike EMTs and Bike Paramedics. Bike races look to our expertise for on-course safety by providing capable riders that can gain rapid access to reported injuries. In addition EMS Unlimited sponsors teamEMS, our initiative to get as many professionals in the emergency response industry on bikes. This is our way of promoting a healthy outlet for work-life balance by providing affordable and accessible outdoor recreation. Many members of our Bike Medical team and teamEMS are women who, just like the boys, want to gain confidence and improve technical MTB skills. Through our vast experience working with many different bike events EMS Unlimited saw no better way to support our Lady Shredders than sending them to a Vida MTB Clinic. Bike Medic and teamEMS rider Chelsea just returned from the Sedona, AZ stop on the Vida MTB Series and tells us about her experience:

“On the day of the VIDA clinic, I was overwhelmed with excitement, giggles and smiles as approximately sixty female mountain bikers flowed into the mountain bike skills park in Sedona, AZ. It was a full spectrum of women whom varied in age, skill level and mountain biking backgrounds converging in one place to learn and support each other as female mountain bikers. We were first introduced to Sarah, the President of Operations who said, “Congratulations! You’ve made it through the hardest part and that’s just signing up for the clinic and showing up!” I couldn’t agree with her more because once I was there, any inkling of nervousness, had been dissipated by the sheer stoke and excitement from my fellow participants and coaches. VIDA does a tremendous job with creating a supportive and empowering environment for female riders that allows you to challenge yourself and confidently grow as a stronger female mountain biker. They did a great job with splitting the sixty riders up into small groups of about 5-8 riders of similar skill level and assigning 2-3 coaches per group. I had the opportunity to be coached by Dawn and Emily, who I coined as my dream estrogen coaching team. Both were very strong and skilled riders but more importantly for a clinic setting, they were great coaches and knew how to teach. Dawn is a positive-verbal-judo master and gave every girl in our group that “Ah-ha” moment by verbally breaking down a skill so you knew exactly how to do it before you tried. Emily’s finesse and straight-to-the-point instruction when demonstrating a feature or skill gave me the reassurance and confidence to attempt features I never imagined myself riding. The one-two coaching combo that I experienced was phenomenal and I can’t thank them enough for starting off my mountain bike season with more confidence, control and skill than I had ended with in my previous season. As an EMS provider that responds to emergencies on mountain bike courses built for experts, I know I can do my job safely and efficiently after attending the VIDA clinic. I highly recommend VIDA’s mountain bike clinics to any rider and at any skill level. Not only will your mountain biking skills be pushed forward but also you’ll walk away with a few more female friends to ride with in the future.

VIDA also provided many activities that were free to anyone including group rides, yoga sessions lead by VIDA coach Tricia, and Tech Talks. If I had to suggest one component of the VIDA activities that could be improved on it would be the group ride. On the first group ride we had about 24 female riders, split up into two non-descriptive groups. Not only were we a giant female force on the trail for any hiker, dog or fellow mountain biker to reckon with but we were so varied in skill level that it was hard to keep the groups flowing and together. But by the end of the ride, we all had a blast and lots of laughs. Tricia’s yoga class was the perfect way to start my day. Her class gave me inspiration to tackle the Sedona trails and feeling refreshed. Two Tech Talks were given by Andy Jones of Squish Dynamics and registered Dietitian/Nutritionist Uriell Proft-Carlson from Skratch Labs. Andy gave the most informative talk on mountain bike suspension and he even tuned up my suspension during the festival so I could enjoy my full suspension bike to it’s fullest potential. I’ve never felt my bike ride better, so when I left the festival I even gave him my fork and seat post dropper to do some scheduled maintenance and repairs. Uriell introduced me to my new favorite hydration and recovery drinks by Skratch Labs. They are seriously delicious and are made with wholesome ingredients that you can actually pronounce when you read the nutritional label. While eating the incredible cookies she made with Skratch Labs Cookie Mix, she gave a great summary talk on how to prepare your fuel before, during and after your ride. She really helped me understand what I could be doing better when replacing the fuel that I used while working races or just out for a recreational ride. I highly recommend her articles on Skratch Labs blog or even paying her a visit at her private practice Whole Life Nutrition in Breckenridge, CO.

All in all, I recommended all aspects of VIDA MTB series to all the ladies of all skill levels.  I look forward to trying other locations and even making Sedona Mountain Bike Festival an annual event to get me ready for the season.

Event Medical Team Gear Review: Big Agnes Shovelhead Jacket

With the warmth and comfort #motherofcomfort of the Big Agnes Jacket our Event EMT and Event RN team from Event Medical Solutions Unlimited stays toasty warm at winter festivals!

Event Medical Solutions Unlimited, LLC (EMS Unlimited)

Product review:

Finding the right gear for the right job can be hard in EMS, that’s why we feel it is our duty to report on the gear we use. To share with our peers what works well and why we like it for both on and off the job.

Event Medical Solutions Unlimited, LLC recently outfitted our team with a fleet of Big Agnes Shovelhead down jackets. Often times our crew is standing watch over festivals or other outdoor events exposed to the elements of snow, wind and cold. We choose the Shovelhead jacket for our event medical team based on a variety of reasons. Event RN Brooke shares her thoughts on the Mens Shovelhead, which describe exactly why we chose this jacket to protect our event medical crew from the elements:

I am a woman, and this jacket is geared toward the men so of course I’m going to say it could be tailored better to fit a woman’s curves. When I purchase my own Shovelhead I’ll get a woman’s.
That being said, I found this jacket to be wonderful! It has a hood, which I pretty much always want, although I would have liked the hood to be bigger. When the jacket was zipped I couldn’t pull the hood over my head; it would not fit over a helmet.
The mid-weight, 700 fill DownTek in a straight cut definitely kept me feeling warm even when the temps dropped to 8 degrees. I was cozy with just a light weight hoodie under the jacket and minimal activity. The lightweight nylon rip-stop shell is wind and water-resistant which kept our crew moving throughout the night comfortably and we weren’t as worried about the light weight material getting caught on branches or people as we moved through the crowds. The main zipper goes up to the chin and kept out drafts even when the winds kicked up and the snow started dumping. I especially like the thumb holes! They were comfortable and big enough to wear over my gloves-which also helped keep out drafts. Yet, when the sun was out and the thumb holes weren’t in use I didn’t feel bulky. The elastic kept the sleeves where I wanted them. It was perfect having the extra mesh inside to stash additional items. My favorite however is the chest pocket for easy access to ID’s/credit cards/cash. I’ve had the jackets were it is on the inside, but in the cold weather its nice not to have to expose your body to the wind and weather. The zippers are textured too so the pockets were easy to use even with my gloves on.
Overall, it felt like the lightweight, warmth and comfort of a sleeping bag combined with the ease and mobility of a high-tech jacket. It was great in the cold and  warmer weather (50s) and will definitely be adding this to my collection.

EMT and Paramedic Bike Teams head into the Back Country of Crested Butte, CO

Steamboat Springs, Colo (January 12th 2017): Event Medical Solutions Unlimited LLC (EMS Unlimited) founded and based in Steamboat Springs, Colorado is pleased to announce growth into statewide and national markets as it enters its sixth year of business. EMS Unlimited provides medical standby and emergency management services that are invaluable to event directors. The company’s motto is “… do it again tomorrow.” A phrase that applies to event participants and the company itself.

EMS Unlimited came to life in Steamboat Springs when company President Ebin Latrimurti saw special event directors struggle to provide their event with affordable and comprehensive on-site medical providers. “After volunteering for a few bike races I noticed that not only was it difficult for race directors to find medical staff but it was also time-consuming for them to coordinate the schedules, equipment and emergency planning that their participants needed” said Ebin. The company was well received by local event organizers and even caught the eye of Steamboats’ Small Business Micro Grant Committee. EMS Unlimited was awarded a small business grant through the city’s small business micro grant program in 2012.

A top quality team of Event Medical Solutions Unlimited EMTs and Paramedics

Now coming into the company’s 6th year of operation, EMS Unlimited is proud to report several milestones and accomplishments. Since inception the number of events served has grown every year. In 2014 the company began a partnership with PowerIce to provide their frozen hydration bars at sporting events. Also in 2014 EMS Unlimited contributed expertise about event medical services in an article published on the nationally used registration web site, Active.com. For 2015 EMS Unlimited took on projects that served Orlando, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angles, Seattle and New York. In 2016 EMS Unlimited obtained a dedicated FCC frequency license and invested in a communications network. Also in 2016 patient care documentation became an electronic affair, this has improved confidentiality and quality improvement. Data collection over the years has afforded EMS Unlimited the ability to scale services in a way that ensures every event is staffed with the right number of people at the right time. “We saw record numbers of patients in 2016, treating over 400 event participants and spectators for a vast array of injuries” said Ebin. In addition to our national clients EMS Unlimited has provided services to events in Santa Fe, Taos, Durango, Crested Butte, Gunnison, Montrose, Grand Junction, Vail, Breckenridge, Grand Lake, Winter Park, Colorado Springs, Denver and of course Steamboat Springs.

With our roots in Steamboat Springs EMS Unlimited works to bring more events to our town and promote the variety of exceptional local events. Ebin concluded by saying “Our success is purely a reflection of the communities support, our dedicated and professional Healthcare Providers and the cooperation of many public emergency service agencies.” This year EMS Unlimited plans to increase the number of employee’s and provide more fringe benefits, grow the competitive running and biking team that is teamEMS and develop a robust logistics system that maximizes our ability to serve a greater number of events from Durango to Steamboat, Grand Junction to Denver and everything in between.

PowerICE™ and EMS Unlimited Form Partnership Providing Hydration with Medical Services

PowerICE and EMS Unlimited are joining forces at athletic events across the United States to provide PowerICE frozen hydration bars to participants who need first aid.

PowerICE has built its reputation on enhancing athlete performance by cooling the core body temperature before, during and after a workout and by rehydrating the body and replenishing lost electrolytes. Event Medical Solutions Unlimited (EMS Unlimited), an on-sight medical services company, believes the same cooling and hydrating principle applies to basic first aid and can help patients  suffering from exhaustion due to heat or overexertion during a race.

“At EMS Unlimited, we are always seeking ways to provide our customers with the best possible value and service,” said Ebin Latrimurti, President of EMS Unlimited. “PowerIce is a great tool to have at our running, biking and other endurance events. It allows us to help patients cool their core temperature, rehydrate and ultimately recover faster, which helps everyone stick to our motto — “…Do it again tomorrow.”

EMS Unlimited recently had an opportunity to speak about the importance of having EMS services at special events on theActive Endurance Event Director’s Blog in a three-part article.

Providing Hydration with Medical Services

Press Release: Two Steamboat Springs Colo companies join forces to support athletic events

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (April 3, 2014) – PowerIce and EMS Unlimited are joining forces at athletic events across the United States to provide PowerICE frozen hydration bars to participants who need first aid.

“It’s fantastic that EMS Unlimited recognizes that PowerICE is much more than a performance-enhancing bar for athletes,” said Blair McNamara, Vice President of Sales & Marketing for PowerICE. “The medical applications for paramedics in the field, and for health care professionals overseeing surgery recovery rooms, are big.”

“PowerICE has always been a fast and healthy way to rehydrate with only 30 calories per frozen bar and just 8 grams of sugar,” McNamara said. “Plus, we recently reformulated PowerICE to include only all-natural ingredients, so now PowerICE is even more attractive to medical professionals and athletes — folks who truly care about what they and their patients are consuming.”

The PowerICE/EMS Unlimited partnership is a natural fit. Both companies are based in Steamboat Springs, Colo., and are fixtures at  athletic events where the safety and comfort of participants is priority one. In 2014, EMS Unlimited will provide professional medical services to more than two dozen mountain biking, cycling, running and other sporting events across the country.

“At EMS Unlimited, we are always seeking ways to provide our customers with the best possible value and service,” said Ebin Latrimurti, President of EMS Unlimited. “PowerIce is a great tool to have at our running, biking and other endurance events. It allows us to help patients cool their core temperature, rehydrate and ultimately recover faster, which helps everyone stick to our motto — ‘…Do it again tomorrow.’

PITFALLS OF COMMON EVENT MEDICAL SOLUTIONS

Here is part 3 of the the informative series on providing medical staffing and associated services to your special event. We were grateful for the opportunity to offer some insight into the matter. Click the link below to read the full story on the Active Endurance Blog.

PITFALLS OF COMMON EVENT MEDICAL SOLUTIONS

This is the third guest post from Sarah Rawley, who produces national mountain bike events, races pro in the enduro circuit, and writes about the latest trends and events in the industry.

EMS

As the event director, you are constantly weighing the pros and cons of different elements for your event, all the while keeping your budget and bottom line in mind. In our previous blog, Part 2: Common Solutions to Providing Medical Services at Your Eventwe went over common plans for an event. Now we will go over variables to keep in mind when selecting the best solution for your next event.

Volunteers Cost More Than You Expect
Volunteers are instrumental at every event, however they may actually cost more than you realize. Volunteers need supplies, coordination and insurance.

Placing even the best-intentioned volunteer on your course does not guaranteed they will have the necessary supplies, training, certifications, or professional licensing to provide the specific medical care your event will need. Without the proper tools and medical equipment, volunteers can be rather limited in their ability to offer effective care and treatment.

As an event director you should take the time to conduct a proper interview to verify the extent oftheir training, knowledge and ability to care for your participants. Most likely you will need to provide (aka… beg, borrow, steal) the medical supplies, hoping you procured the right “band-aides,” and distribute them throughout the event. Now you have to coordinate the best placement of all volunteers, to ensure they are where they need to be, when they need to be.

In line with this topic is the plan for legal disposal of blood-soaked bandages and documentation of the care that is provided. Who is responsible for this and will take care of it safely?

Volunteers may also be liable. Good Samaritan rules exempt licensed health care providers from liability when there is no compensation or obligation to provide care. When the volunteer agrees to serve your event in exchange for lunch, a t-shirt and/or goodie bag, this pre-determined arrangement may exclude them from Good Samaritan protection. Even off-duty medical doctors (MDs) should contact their malpractice provider before volunteering.

Does your event carry insurance that will cover medical costs and/or lost wages if the volunteer suffers an injury? This may not be limited to physical trauma, but can include blood-borne disease transmitted while irrigating or bandaging wounds.

EMS Unlimited recently had an opportunity to speak about the importance of having EMS services at special events. Here is a story first published by Active Endurance that kicks off a 3 part series:

Top 5 Reasons Why You Need to Hire Emergency Management For Your Next Event (Guest Blog)

This is a guest post from Sarah Rawley, who produces national mountain bike events, races pro in the enduro circuit, and writes about the latest trends and events in the industry. Participating in and producing events that can be high risk gives her plenty of insight on emergency management and she will be contributing a three-part blog series on Medical Services at Endurance Events. Here’s Part 1!

As you get closer to the big day of your event, the checklist continues to grow and more questions emerge that may have not existed when you first set out. Do I have enough volunteers? Should I have an ambulance at the finish line? Do I have a back-up plan and the staffing to execute it?

All of these questions can be daunting, but by taking a few minutes to assess the potential risks of your event, several weeks (or months) in advance, and by hiring event medical staffing to analyze your areas of risk and turn them into areas of safety, you will not only save yourself time and money in the long run, but you can keep your focus where it needs to be on race day and let the experts handle the medical emergencies.

Here are the top 5 reasons why you need to hire emergency management for your next event:

1. Every event has risk, no matter the size or activity
A large event may not in itself increase the risk of injury or illness, but it does raise your odds. An event with novice participants may increase the chance of falls or general unpreparedness for your event’s unique challenges; whereas a smaller field of more advanced participants may have a higher incidence of speed-related falls or more serious trauma. Add to the equation events that are “ultra-distance” or take place in remote locations with unpredictable access to properly equipped, licensed and trained medical professionals, and you need to have your own staff on-course to be able to handle life-threatening emergencies on-the-spot, before 911 responders can dispatch personnel to the situation.

2. It sets your event apart from others
Events with professional medical services on-site that are visible and easy to access make the participants feel safe, and able to enjoy the event knowing if something happens, they will be taken care of. They also feel like the organizer has put considerable thought into that safety and their entry fee is going towards resources that ensure their well-being is a priority.

3. Your Liability is Reduced = Peace of Mind
Let’s face it; putting on events can be high risk and high liability. When it comes to the big things like the unpredictability of weather, monitoring volunteers at aid stations, and handling a potential accident that disrupts your event, you want professionals by your side to help.

Hiring specialized event medical services to come prepared for additional factors like weather means you’ll have the right people stationed and equipped where and when you need them, and ultimately reduces your liability in an emergency situation. Ebin Latrimurti, paramedic and owner of one such company, Event Medical Solutions Unlimited said, “At EMS Unlimited we not only ensure our customers are provided with licensed staff who are properly equipped with medical supplies, we also analyze your event for all potential hazards and handle all the race day medical coordination. We have received countless comments from event directors telling us how valuable it is to take this worry off their mind.”

4. It guarantees compliance of your event permits
More often than not, permits through local land management agencies, cities and towns require extensive operation and medical plans. Hiring the proper medical services to be on-site at your event will guarantee you can check off the list of requirements for an approved permit. Specialized event medical service companies can also help write the medical plan with all of the proper details and terminology, and contact the proper authorities to provide notification of the event, taking the guess-work and leg-work out of it for you.

5. Medical emergencies can happen at any moment completely unannounced
You may be thinking to yourself, “I’ve been putting on my event for five years and haven’t had to hand out anything more than a band-aid.” While this may be true, this does not mean your event is exempt from a medical emergency that, if not handled properly, may potentially be the end of an event.

As an event producer you assume responsibility for providing a safe and enjoyable event for your participants, volunteers and everyone involved. Providing medical standby services to your event is one which should be taken seriously in order to meet your assumed responsibility. There are several options for achieving this goal based on the risk assessment of your event, which we will go over in Part 2: Common Solutions to Providing Medical Services at Your Event….coming next month! Taking the extra effort to provide comprehensive and quality medical care to your event is a bit like car insurance, where a high deductible is less painful on a monthly basis, rather than all at once when you do get into an accident.

This blog is not intended to be 100% conclusive, but rather a quick guide to different options that are available and factors to consider when strategizing your next event medical plan. For a more in-depth analysis of your event, contact Event Medical Solutions Unlimited, LLC at 970-658-0637.

Rider down

“Rider down, he’s not moving”

Event organizers have a lot to consider when it comes to medical coverage

teamEMS riders in the Tour de Steamboat 2012

Steamboat Springs, Colo (May 03, 2013): Do you think anyone will hit that tree or lose control on this turn? What will we do if someone has a heart attack at the midway aid station? Should I have an ambulance at the finish line or recruit volunteer EMT’s? If you have ever directed or produced an athletic event of any kind you have certainly asked yourself these, and many similar questions in the planning process. As an event producer you assume responsibility for providing a safe and enjoyable event. You take-on the task of assessing the size and scope of your event to determine how you will meet that responsibility for not only are your participants but also your staff and spectators. Granted, not every event requires a full complement of ambulances lining the course, which would not be practical from a monetary or logistical standpoint. You do however need to assess the risks of your event and put in place the most cost-effective system for responding to medical emergencies. From small club gatherings on local routes to multi-state stage races there are shared inherent risks and unique hazards specific to every event. Consider the size of your field, standard ability level of your participants, distances and elevations traversed, access to local emergency medical services, cellular and other communication limitations, time of year your event will be held, and on-course resources for hydration and medical care. Taken individually or collectively these risk considerations can help determine the most effective and financially feasible method for ensuring your event is prepared for medical emergencies.

A large event, greater than a few hundred participants, may not in itself increase the risk of injury or illness but it does raise your odds. A large event with a projected standard ability level to be novice increases the chances of rider collisions while a smaller field of more advanced riders may have a higher incidence of speed related falls or car versus rider accidents.

Adding to the analysis is the course itself; longer rides bring greater incidence of dehydration and fatigue or fatigue related accidents. Mountain bike events look for epic single-track which are typically long distances from Ambulance access points while longer road tours often travel between rural communities with unpredictable access to Advanced Life Support (ALS). Other course considerations should include elevation changes and rider workload which add to increased downhill speeds. Also on the topic of course considerations, serious injuries often need rapid helicopter transport to a definitive trauma facility. Most Air Ambulance providers operate aircraft small enough to land on highways for road accidents but identifying a suitable and easily accessible landing area for the off-road events can be challenging.

teamEMS mountain bikeTying into the course assessment and access to 911 responders is the ability to communicate within your event and with those emergency responders. Road courses in those rural areas may not always have cellular service and will probably span distances to vast for two-way radios. Backcountry races face the same challenges. How will you, as the race director, know when there is an emergency and how will you coordinate with “911” to ensure timely and accurate information is provided to facilitate an expeditious response, extrication and transport. A common problem can be multiple calls for assistance when a rider is ill or injured. When several people call 911, all in an effort to help, there can be conflicting information with regards to the patient’s location and injuries which can all lead to confusion and delays.

We touch on the topics of weather and aid stations to finish up our event analysis. Obviously we cannot predict the weather but we should consider seasonal norms. Fall and spring events can bring extremes on either side of the hot or cold spectrum, consider how one or both of these conditions could affect your participants both during the event and at the finish line. Consider the peak summer season where hot and dry conditions can cause dehydration and heat related illness. Factoring in the weather and other components of the course, you as the race director, will have to analyze where you will put aid stations and marshals and what you will equip them with. Do you have radios for everyone, how much water and other nutritional support will be available, how will you get people and supplies to those points and which stations if any will have medical support? One last consideration for your aid stations and medical staff is the matter of supplies. Will you provide the aid stations with medical gear, if so, where will you acquire these supplies and how many “band aids” do you actually need?

Access to local public emergency responders should always be a consideration. Often times an event producer will satisfy their medical needs by planning to call 911 if there is a medical emergency. This is certainly a reasonable option for some events but then there is the dilemma of coordinating these emergency responders. Where will they park, how will they know where the ill or injured patient is located and how will they access them? But let’s start with some basic background into your local emergency medical responders. First and foremost remember that “911” is a public system designed to serve the needs of the local population. When your event hosts hundreds of participants, staff and spectators is it unrealistic to expect that an Ambulance will always be available to immediately respond to your event. In other words, if there are five nearby ambulances and six people have called 911 before you, depending on the severity of your emergency there may be a delay. Emergency medical response systems and assets vary, none better or worse than others but differences you as the race director should be aware of. Ambulances may be public or private, paid or volunteer (or a combination of paid and volunteer), Fire Department integrated EMS or stand-alone Ambulance, and may be staffed by Advanced Life Support (ALS) providers or Basic Life Support (BLS). ALS means there is access to advanced medications and procedures while BLS is limited to less invasive treatments and medications. Most counties have publicly funded Search and Rescue (SAR) teams that can access those remote areas but are not typically designed to respond with the same quickness as an Ambulance. Helicopters staffed by critical care Nurses and Paramedics are within a reasonable distance to most rural areas throughout the county. Each of these components to the emergency response system work together on a day-to-day basis providing quality medical care and transport all over the county. But remember, your event is a gathering of people and activities that adds a demand on the system which should be planned and coordinated properly through all phases of your event.

MotoCross

Now, what to do with all this information and all of these variables? After all, this is only the medical component; you still have to worry about permits, sponsors, marketing, food, bathrooms, registration and timing just to scratch the surface. Fortunately for you external help and support is available depending on your risk and budget. There are advantages and disadvantages to some of the more common medical solutions that we will discuss. Some come at no cost but your time while others require a new line item in your budget. As previously discussed you can choose to call 911 if there is an emergency, you can invest extra time and leg work to recruit local volunteers with medical experience, hire an ambulance dedicated to your event or bring on a dedicated medical team to consult and staff your entire event.

For smaller events choosing to call 911 is a very reasonable choice. If you are planning a large event and/or one that travels to distances or locations far removed from the nearest Ambulance this option should include pre planning for proper communication with 911 dispatchers and ensuring all your participants know the course well enough to effectively relay locations of ill or injured parties. Be prepared to provide 911 dispatchers with an accurate location of the patient, any and all physical barriers that could impede ambulance access, known or suspected hazards at the location of the incident and details of the patient’s injuries or current condition.

A popular and common alternative is to contact a friend of a friend who knows some people. Off-duty ski patrol, EMT’s or other medical professionals are often eager to volunteer at your event. They enjoy helping as much as they love the sport itself, a free lunch and a cool t-shirt. This is popular because the costs are minimal; provided you have the time or someone you can trust to coordinate these volunteers for you. As the race director and even the volunteer you should consider a few things about this option. First, not to take anything from the well-intentioned volunteer, what supplies will they have to provide the care they are trained and maybe certified or licensed to offer? Without the proper tools your volunteers can be rather limited in their ability to offer the care and treatment they have been trained to provide. In-line with this topic is the plan for proper disposal of blood soaked bandages and documentation of the care that is provided. Does the event or volunteer carry insurance that will cover medical costs or lost wages if they themselves suffer an injury? Remember, this doesn’t have to be physical trauma but can also include blood borne illnesses transmitted while irrigating or bandaging wounds. CRS 13-21-108 is the Colorado Good Samaritan rule that exempts licensed health care providers from liability when there is no compensation or obligation to provide care. When the volunteer agrees to serve your event in exchange for lunch, a t-shirt and/or goodie bags have they then been compensated as part of a predetermined arrangement thus excluding them from Good Samaritan protection?

Hiring a dedicated Ambulance to standby at your finish line is an effective option that saves time and reduces the some of the concerns regarding volunteers. With regards to time this can also be an effective alternative because, in many instances, one phone call to the ambulance operator with the date(s) and time(s) you want them there can meet your needs. Some local ambulance operators may even offer to have an on-duty Ambulance at the finish line at no cost, provided there is not another public call for service. Here are some things to be aware of when you hire a dedicated Ambulance. Costs for this service can add up quickly, ranging from $100-$200 per hour. Is one Ambulance at the finish line enough or will you need one somewhere on course? Be sure to ask if this Ambulance will transport patients and if you will be provided with ALS or BLS staff. Sometimes you are paying the Ambulance to be at your event, this means that they will provide care and treatment but may not always transport the patient to the hospital and will instead summon an additional transport Ambulance, at the patients cost. One last thing to consider about hiring an Ambulance is the knowledge of their staff with regards to the intricacies of your event. In some instances your dedicated Ambulance could be staffed with healthcare providers with little to no knowledge of sports injuries or injury patterns consistent with your sport.

EMS Unlimited EMT's provide basic life support aide tent medical care

The final choice we discuss here are specialized event medical companies that act as your medical foreman or consultants. These companies bring time savings that come from making one phone call, the reduced workload of pre-planning for an emergency and also staff your event with a balanced blend of healthcare providers that meet your budget and safety needs. A quick internet search can find several companies around the nation that provide these services. A Colorado based company, Event Medical Solutions Unlimited, LLC (EMS Unlimited) specializes in giving you the ease of full-service and turn-key medical support to your event at a cost that can be tailored to your event. Throughout the nation a growing number of events are choosing this option to capitalize on the many benefits that come from outsourcing this portion of their event. Among many other events, the Steamboat Stinger has this to say about outsourcing the medical and safety component of their race, “EMS Unlimited was an integral part of the Steamboat Stinger 2012 and we look forward to continuing this great partnership to maintain high quality and professional safety standards on-course for all of our race participants.  When it comes to on-course and finish line safety measures, EMS Unlimited has every base covered, which makes the job of a race director much easier and less stressful.” EMS Unlimited provides pre-event planning and consulting, on-site staffing and transport coordination and even post event clean-up and debrief that collectively combine the advantages of the other options described earlier.

From event producers planning their first race to the seasoned veteran organizer these safety and medical components are always analyzed. Whether it is intentionally or from years of experience, you examine the number of participants, their projected ability level, location and hazards of the course, availability of medical resources and many other aspects of your event. Providing medical standby services to your event is one which should be taken seriously in order meet your assumed responsibility to offer a safe and hazard free event. There are several options for achieving this goal based on the risk assessment of your event. Taking the extra effort to provide comprehensive and quality medical care to your event is a bit like car insurance, where the high deductible is less painful on a monthly basis it stings a lot more when you get into an accident.

EMS staffs up to meet needs of growing event

Steamboat Springs, Colo (April 19, 2012): Event Medical Solutions Unlimited, LLC (EMS) was on hand providing comprehensive medical support in 2011 when the Steamboat Stinger, a 50-mile backcountry mountain bike race established itself as one of the region’s premier MTB events. Race organizers plan to increase participation in 2012 with the addition of a full and half trail run marathon and once again, EMS will be there providing specialized remote access emergency medical care from start to finish.

The Stinger’s mountain bike and marathon events will take place on August 11th & 12th respectively, with start/finish lines at the bottom of Howelson Hill. Trail running is a new addition for 2012 and will include up to 400 participants. The mountain bike event will also allow for a 25% increase over last year’s registration signaling the need for increased medical support over the course of the weekend. Tim Baldwin, a volunteer First Responder at the 2011 Steamboat Stinger said, “Between the heat and grueling nature of the course medical volunteers were treating wounds and assessing for heat related illness.” Race organizer Honey Stinger manages and sponsors the nationally acclaimed event and isn’t taking any chances with the safety and health of event participants, spectators or staff.

Through an agreement with Honey Stinger, EMS Unlimited will provide specialized emergency medical services at strategic points throughout both events. In addition, EMS Unlimited will be provide race organizers with pre-event medical guidance and risk reduction consulting. In addition, EMS will provide race-day medical services consisting of professional Paramedics and EMT’s. Event organizer Erin Campbell said, “We’re taking all the necessary steps to keep everyone safe. To that end, we’re thrilled to once again partner with EMS – they add true value and peace of mind by providing a medical safety net for those in need.”

“Steamboat Springs is home to a very dedicated and skillful corps of Paramedics and EMT’s,” states EMS Unlimited Medical Director Laura Sehnert, MD, “If anyone at the event becomes injured or sick they’ll be in very capable hands.”

Select Paramedics and EMT’s will be properly equipped and strategically placed throughout the course to quickly provide time sensitive medical care and transport coordination. In addition, a full service Event Medical Aide Tent will be placed near the finish line for 911 coordination, racer examinations, wound bandaging, free blood pressure & EKG checks and even respond to spectator medical emergencies.
